Background & Story

Born and educated in Dublin, Ireland, I did my public accounting in the City of London.  I joined Sperry Univac (mainframes) in their International Division Headquarters, and later, Data Terminal Systems (electronic cash registers)  in EMEA finance.  At DTS, I became the French controller in Paris, and I subsequently became the EMEA finance director, based in Seneffe, Belgium, and Fürstenfeldbruck, Germany. I had an interesting EMEA "road warrior" role, living and working in many cities.  My base shifted to Maynard, Massachusetts, and I took on Canada, Hong Kong and Australia responsibilities.  When National Semiconductor acquired DTS, I moved to Santa Clara, California.  NSC moved me into external reporting and general FASB compliance.  Later, I joined GEC PLC's Plessey Semiconductor unit as North American finance director, reporting to the North American CFO.

I joined Oracle as an Accounting Domain Expert, advising the EBS, Fusion and Cloud Service development engineers on the implications of revisions to standards, changes in currency, and generally how the software was used.  Amending ERP for the adoption of the euro was great fun. I observed the "convergence" of US GAAP and IFRS for the software development unit, and was a member of the IASB's software company subcommittee during the time the standard setters were working on the revenue and leasing standards.

I retired from Oracle in September 2019, and currently serve the Oracle community individually, and in association with Celantra Systems and other consultants.

This website is initially a personal reflection on ASC 606 and IFRS 15 and my experiences with corporations on both sides of the Atlantic as they adopted it.  I hope you enjoy the site.
